Online Therapy in Ohio
Therapy for Adults from Cleveland to the Ohio River
About My Work In Ohio
I work with clients across Ohio — Columbus and the central counties, Cleveland and the northeast, Cincinnati and Dayton, Toledo, Akron, and the smaller communities in the southeast where the nearest counselor who takes your insurance can be a long drive.
Ohio is one of the newest states where I can practice, through the Counseling Compact — an interstate agreement that lets a counselor licensed in one member state hold a privilege to practice in another. My license is held in Georgia, and my Ohio privilege means I practice under Ohio's laws and ethical standards when you're located here.
Care that meets you where you are
Ohio has real gaps in access to specialized mental health care, particularly outside the three C's. Teletherapy closes some of that distance. You don't need to find a counselor within driving range who happens to have training in what you're dealing with — you need a secure connection and an hour.
That also matters for privacy. In a smaller community, walking into a counseling office can be its own kind of exposure. Online sessions take that off the table.
Specialties - Ohio
Trauma & PTSD — childhood trauma, complex trauma, and relational and intimate partner trauma
Religious Trauma & Faith Deconstruction — shame-informed, unhurried care for adults from high-control or high-demand faith backgrounds, including Ohio's many conservative and traditionalist religious communities
Addiction & Dual Diagnosis — integrated care for substance use alongside mental health conditions, including recovery maintenance and support for family members
ADHD — specialized adult ADHD care, diagnosed or suspected
Anxiety & Depression — including grief, panic, social anxiety, and burnout
How Teletherapy Works
Sessions generally last between 45-55 minutes, and are held via secure HIPAA-compliant video — you only need a private space and a phone, tablet, or computer. There's no commute, no waiting room, and no need to be near a major city.
Insurance & Fees — Ohio
I'm in network with Spring Health in Ohio. Private pay is $150 per session, invoiced the day of service, payable by card or ACH.
Insurance coverage for counselors practicing under a Counseling Compact privilege is still catching up industry-wide, so my panel list here is shorter than in the states where I hold a license. That's changing — if you have a plan you're hoping to use, contact me and I'll tell you where it stands. Full details on my Insurance & Fees page.
About David Routly, LPC
I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor with 21 years of experience, licensed in Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Vermont, and New Hampshire, and practicing in Ohio and Minnesota through the Counseling Compact. I'm board certified in telemental health (BC-TMH), certified as an ADHD Clinical Services Provider (ADHD-CCSP), and a Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor in Georgia — which means part of my work is training and overseeing other therapists.
What I care about more than any of that is whether you feel safe enough to be honest, and whether the work is actually useful to you.
I'm trained in a range of approaches — cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, and EMDR. I think of those as tools rather than a method I run people through. Which ones we use depends on you and what you're working on. Some people want structure and something to practice between sessions. Others need to think out loud with someone who knows what to listen for. Often it's both, at different points.
What stays constant is that we go at your pace, you decide what we work on, and nothing happens because it was next in a sequence.
