About My Work In Minnesota

I work with clients throughout Minnesota — Minneapolis and St. Paul and the surrounding suburbs, Rochester, Duluth and the North Shore, St. Cloud, the Iron Range, and the rural stretches of greater Minnesota where specialized care is genuinely hard to reach.

Minnesota is one of the newest states where I can practice, through the Counseling Compact — an interstate agreement that lets a counselor licensed in one member state hold a privilege to practice in another. My license is held in Georgia, and my Minnesota privilege means I practice under Minnesota's laws and ethical standards when you're located here.

Distance shouldn't decide what care you get

Minnesota has excellent mental health resources concentrated in the Twin Cities and Rochester, and considerably thinner coverage once you're north and west of them. Winter makes a long drive to an appointment harder still.

Teletherapy means the specialty matters more than the geography. Whether you're in Edina or Ely, the session is the same.

Specialties - Minnesota

  • Trauma & PTSD — childhood trauma, complex trauma, and relational and intimate partner trauma

  • Religious Trauma & Faith Deconstruction — support for adults leaving high-control or high-demand religious environments, and for the particular loneliness of doing that in a community built around a church

  • Addiction & Dual Diagnosis — integrated care for substance use alongside mental health conditions, including recovery maintenance and support for family members

  • ADHD — specialized adult ADHD care, diagnosed or suspected

  • Anxiety & Depression — including grief, panic, social anxiety, and seasonal patterns

How Teletherapy Works

Sessions generally last between 45-55 minutes, and are held via secure HIPAA-compliant video — you only need a private space and a phone, tablet, or computer. There's no commute, no waiting room, and no need to be near a major city.

Insurance & Fees — Minnesota

I'm in network with Spring Health in Minnesota. Private pay is $150 per session, invoiced the day of service, payable by card or ACH.

Insurance coverage for counselors practicing under a Counseling Compact privilege is still catching up industry-wide, so my panel list here is shorter than in the states where I hold a license. That's changing — if you have a plan you're hoping to use, contact me and I'll tell you where it stands. Full details on my Insurance & Fees page.

About David Routly, LPC

I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor with 21 years of experience, licensed in Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Vermont, and New Hampshire, and practicing in Ohio and Minnesota through the Counseling Compact. I'm board certified in telemental health (BC-TMH), certified as an ADHD Clinical Services Provider (ADHD-CCSP), and a Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor in Georgia — which means part of my work is training and overseeing other therapists.

What I care about more than any of that is whether you feel safe enough to be honest, and whether the work is actually useful to you.

I'm trained in a range of approaches — cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, and EMDR. I think of those as tools rather than a method I run people through. Which ones we use depends on you and what you're working on. Some people want structure and something to practice between sessions. Others need to think out loud with someone who knows what to listen for. Often it's both, at different points.

What stays constant is that we go at your pace, you decide what we work on, and nothing happens because it was next in a sequence.
