Trauma Therapy for Adults — PTSD, Complex Trauma & Healing

A lighthouse on a rocky cliff overlooking the ocean under a clear blue sky.

Trauma does not always look the way we expect. It is not only combat veterans or survivors of violent crime. Trauma can come from childhood neglect, a difficult medical experience, the end of an important relationship, years spent in a high-control environment, or a hundred other experiences that left a lasting mark on how you see yourself and the world around you.

What trauma has in common across all its forms is this: it overwhelms the nervous system's ability to process what happened. The result can be flashbacks, chronic anxiety, emotional numbness, difficulty trusting others, or a persistent sense that something is wrong — even when you cannot name what it is.

With over 21 years of clinical experience, I provide evidence-based trauma therapy for adults navigating PTSD, complex trauma, and the lasting effects of painful life experiences. You do not need a formal diagnosis to begin. You only need to recognize that something from your past is still getting in the way of your present.

My approach to trauma therapy

My primary treatment modality for trauma is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) — one of the most extensively researched and effective treatments for PTSD and trauma-related conditions, with strong endorsement from the American Psychological Association and the World Health Organization. EMDR works by helping the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they lose their emotional charge, allowing you to move forward without being constantly pulled back.

I also draw on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to address the distorted beliefs that trauma often leaves behind — about safety, self-worth, and trust — and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for clients who need practical skills to manage the emotional intensity that trauma can produce.

One area of particular specialization within trauma work is religious trauma and spiritual abuse. Harm that occurs within a faith context — whether through high-control religious environments, spiritual manipulation, purity culture, or the loss of an entire belief system — can be uniquely disorienting because it affects not just what happened to you, but your framework for understanding the world. I approach this work with clinical precision and genuine curiosity, with no agenda about where your spiritual journey should lead. If you are looking for dedicated support for religious trauma, I have a full page on that here: https://routlycounseling.com/religious-trauma-therapy

What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based therapy designed specifically for trauma. Rather than requiring you to talk through every detail of a painful memory, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation — typically guided eye movements — to help the brain process and integrate traumatic experiences in a way that reduces their emotional impact.

EMDR does not erase memories. It changes how those memories are stored so they no longer feel like an open wound. Many clients begin to notice meaningful shifts within a focused course of treatment, even for experiences that have felt stuck for years.
